Context of Psalms 99:8

6Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the Lord, and he answered them. 7He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them. Thou answeredst them, O Lord our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions. 9Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy.

Commentaries on Psalms 99:8

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Thou - forgavest them - When the people had sinned, and wrath was about to descend on them, Moses and Aaron interceded for them, and they were not destroyed. Tookest vengeance of their inventions - God spared them, but showed his displeasure at their misdoings. He chastised, but did not consume them. This is amply proved in the history of this people.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Thou answeredst them, O Lord our God - The reference here is to God as “our” God; that is, the language used by those who now worship him is designed to give encouragement in approaching his throne. The God that “we” worship is the same that “they” worshipped; and as he answered them, we may feel assured that he will answer us. Thou wast a God that forgavest them - They were not perfect; they were sinners; they often offended thee, and yet thou didst…Read the comment

They in every thing made God's word and law their rule, knowing that they could not else expect that their prayers should be answered. They all wonderfully prevailed with God in prayer; miracles were wrought at their request. They pleaded for the people, and obtained answers of peace.
