Context of Psalms 99:8
6Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name: they called unto Jehovah, and he answered them. 7He spoke unto them in the pillar of cloud: they kept his testimonies, and the statute that he gave them. Jehovah, our God, thou answeredst them: a forgiving God wast thou unto them, though thou tookest vengeance of their doings. 9Exalt Jehovah our God, and worship at the hill of his holiness; for holy is Jehovah our God.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Thou - forgavest them - When the people had sinned, and wrath was about to descend on them, Moses and Aaron interceded for them, and they were not destroyed. Tookest vengeance of their inventions - God spared them, but showed his displeasure at their misdoings. He chastised, but did not consume them. This is amply proved in the history of this people.Read the comment
