Context of Psalms 41:7
5My enemies say terrible things about me: “When will he die, and when will his family name disappear?” 6When one of them comes to visit me, he speaks foolishly. His heart collects gossip. ⌞Then⌟ he leaves to tell others. Everyone who hates me whispers about me. They think evil things about me and say, 8“A devilish disease has attached itself to him. He will never leave his sickbed.” 9Even my closest friend whom I trusted, the one who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7All that hate me whisper together against me - They talk the matter over where they suppose that no one can hear; they endeavonr to collect and arrange all that can be said against me; they place all that they can say or think as individuals, all that they have separately known or suspected, into “common stock,” and make use of it against me. There is a conspiracy against me - a purpose to do me all the evil that they can. This shows that, in the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-13Verses 5-13 We complain, and justly, of the want of sincerity, and that there is scarcely any true friendship to be found among men; but the former days were no better. One particularly, in whom David had reposed great confidence, took part with his enemies. And let us not think it strange, if we receive evil from those we suppose to be friends. Have not we ourselves thus broken our words toward God? We eat of his bread daily, yet lift up the heel against…Read the comment
