Context of Psalms 4:7
5Offer the sacrifices of righteousness by trusting the Lord. 6Many are saying, “Who can show us anything good?” Let the light of your presence shine on us, O Lord. You put more joy in my heart than when their grain and new wine increase. 8I fall asleep in peace the moment I lie down because you alone, O Lord, enable me to live securely.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Thou hast put gladness in my heart - Thou hast given my soul what it wanted and wished for. I find now a happiness which earthly things could not produce. I have peace of conscience, and joy in the Holy Ghost; such inward happiness as they cannot boast who have got the highest increase of corn and wine; those Two Things in the abundance of which many suppose happiness to be found. To corn and wine all the versions, except the Chaldee, add oil; for corn…Read the comment

This happiness had its seat in the “heart,” and not in any external circumstances. All true happiness must have its seat there, for if the heart is…Read the comment
