10Then Moses and Aaron assembled the community in front of the rock and said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring water out of this rock for you?” 11Moses raised his hand and hit the rock twice with the staff. Water came pouring out, and all the people and their animals drank. But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “You didn’t trust me! You didn’t show the Israelites how holy I am! So you will not bring this congregation into the land I’m giving them.” 13This was the oasis of Meribah [Complaining], where the Israelites complained about the Lord and where he showed them he was holy. 14Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. He said, “This is what your brother Israel says: You know all the hardships we’ve had.

Commentaries on Numbers 20:12
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12Because ye believed me not - What was the offense for which Moses was excluded from the promised land? It appears to have consisted in some or all of the following particulars: God had commanded him ( Numbers 20:8;) to take the rod in his hand, and go and Speak To The Rock, and it should give forth water. It seems Moses did not think speaking would be sufficient, therefore he smote the rock without any command so to do. He did this twice, which certainly…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-12Instead of obeying God's instructions with respect, Moses criticized the people (Must we bring you water out of this rock?). Moses did not trust God enough to show God’s holiness to the people. God had told Moses exactly what to do. By acting differently, Moses showed a…Read the comment

It was then either partially dried up by the heat of the season, or had been exhausted by the demands of so vast a multitude.Read the comment
