Context of Matthew 22:23
21They replied, “The emperor’s.” Then he said to them, “Very well, give the emperor what belongs to the emperor, and give God what belongs to God.” 22They were surprised to hear this. Then they left him alone and went away. On that day some Sadducees, who say that people will never come back to life, came to Jesus. They asked him, 24“Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies childless, his brother should marry his widow and have children for his brother.’ 25There were seven brothers among us. The first married and died. Since he had no children, he left his widow to his brother.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 23The same day - Malice is ever active; let it be defeated ever so often, it returns to the charge. Jesus and his Gospel give no quarter to vice; the vicious will give no quarter to him or it. The Sadducees - For an account of these see on Matthew 16:1; (note).Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-33Verses 23-33 The doctrines of Christ displeased the infidel Sadducees, as well as the Pharisees and Herodians. He carried the great truths of the resurrection and a future state, further than they had yet been reveled. There is no arguing from the state of things in this world, as to what will take place hereafter. Let truth be set in a clear light, and it appears in full strength. Having thus silenced them, our Lord proceeded to show the truth of the…Read the comment
