Context of Mark 8:3
1About that time there was once again a large crowd with nothing to eat. Jesus called his disciples and said to them, 2“I feel sorry for the people. They have been with me three days now and have nothing to eat. If I send them home before they’ve eaten, they will become exhausted on the road. Some of them have come a long distance.” 4His disciples asked him, “Where could anyone get enough bread to feed these people in this place where no one lives?” 5Jesus asked them, “How many loaves of bread do you have?” They answered, “Seven.”

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-3The last mention of a large crowd was during the feeding of the 5,000 (6:34). Jesus showed compassion in 6:34 because the people were "like sheep without a shepherd." These stories show the concern Jesus has for the whole person. Here, he especially focuses on their hunger. They were in the wilderness and had no food (8:1,4). They had been with Jesus for three days without food and had traveled a long way (8:2). They needed to eat before going home (8:3).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way--In their eagerness they seem not to have thought of the need of provisions for such a length of time; but the Lord thought of it. In Matthew (Mt 15:32) it is, "I will not send them away fasting"--or rather, "To send them away fasting I am unwilling."Read the comment
