Context of Mark 8:3
1At that time, another large crowd had come to hear Jesus. The people had nothing to eat. Jesus asked his disciples to come to him. He said to them, 2‘I feel sorry for this crowd. They have been here with me now for three days and they do not have any food. I do not want to send them back to their homes while they are hungry. They might fall down during their journey because they are weak. Some of them have travelled a long way to come here.’ 4The disciples replied, ‘This place is far from any houses. We cannot get enough bread to feed all these people.’ 5‘How many loaves of bread do you have?’ Jesus asked. ‘We have seven loaves,’ they replied.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-3The last mention of a large crowd was during the feeding of the 5,000 (6:34). Jesus showed compassion in 6:34 because the people were "like sheep without a shepherd." These stories show the concern Jesus has for the whole person. Here, he especially focuses on their hunger. They were in the wilderness and had no food (8:1,4). They had been with Jesus for three days without food and had traveled a long way (8:2). They needed to eat before going home (8:3).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way--In their eagerness they seem not to have thought of the need of provisions for such a length of time; but the Lord thought of it. In Matthew (Mt 15:32) it is, "I will not send them away fasting"--or rather, "To send them away fasting I am unwilling."Read the comment
