Context of Mark 4:38
36Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus along in a boat just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37A violent windstorm came up. The waves were breaking into the boat so that it was quickly filling up. But he was sleeping on a cushion in the back of the boat. So they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to die?” 39Then he got up, ordered the wind to stop, and said to the sea, “Be still, absolutely still!” The wind stopped blowing, and the sea became very calm. 40He asked them, “Why are you such cowards? Don’t you have any faith yet?”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 38On a pillow - probably means a little bed, or hammock, such as are common in small vessels. I have seen several in small packets, or passage boats, not a great deal larger than a bolster.Read the comment

Mark 4:36 Even as he was in the ship - They took him without making any preparation for the voyage; without providing any food or raiment. He was sitting in a ship, or boat, instructing the people. In the same boat, probably ill fitted to encounter a storm on the lake, they sailed. This would render their danger more imminent and the miracle more striking. There were with him other little ships - Belonging…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-41Verses 35-41 Christ was asleep in the storm, to try the faith of his disciples, and to stir them up to pray. When without are fightings, and within are fears, and the spirits are in a tumult, if he say, "Peace, be still," there is a great…Read the comment
