24I can guarantee that none of those invited earlier will taste any food at my banquet.’ ” 25Large crowds were traveling with Jesus. He turned to them and said, “If people come to me and are not ready to abandon their fathers, mothers, wives, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as their own lives, they cannot be my disciples. 27So those who do not carry their crosses and follow me cannot be my disciples. 28“Suppose you want to build a tower. You would first sit down and figure out what it costs. Then you would see if you have enough money to finish it.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26And hate not - Matthew, Matthew 10:37, expresses the true meaning of this word, when he says, He who loveth his father and mother More than me. In Matthew 6:24, he uses the word hate in the same sense. When we read, Romans 9:13, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated, the meaning is simply, I have loved Jacob - the Israelites, more than Esau - the Edomites; and that this is no arbitrary interpretation of the word hate, but one agreeable to the Hebrew…Read the comment

Sit down and count the cost; consider it will cost the mortifying of sin, even the most beloved…Read the comment
