Context of John 18:23

21Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said to them. They know what I’ve said.” 22When Jesus said this, one of the guards standing near Jesus slapped his face and said, “Is that how you answer the chief priest?” Jesus replied to him, “If I’ve said anything wrong, tell me what it was. But if I’ve told the truth, why do you hit me?” 24Annas sent Jesus to Caiaphas, the chief priest. Jesus was still tied up. 25Simon Peter continued to stand and warm himself by the fire. Some men asked him, “Aren’t you, too, one of his disciples?” Peter denied it by saying, “No, I’m not!”

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 23Spoken evil - In my answer to the high priest. If there was any disrespect to the office, and lack of regard for the law which appointed him, then testify to the fact, and let punishment be inflicted according to the law; compare Exodus 22:28. But if well … - While an accused person is on trial he is under the protection of the court, and has a right to demand that all legal measures shall be taken to secure his rights. On this right Jesus insisted, and…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-27Verses 13-27 Simon Peter denied his Master. The particulars have been noticed in the remarks on the other Gospels. The beginning of sin is as the letting forth of water. The sin of lying is a fruitful sin; one lie needs another to support it, and that another. If a call to expose ourselves to danger be clear, we may hope God will enable us to honour him; if it be not, we may fear that God will leave us to shame ourselves. They said nothing concerning the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22-23When Jesus reminded Annas about the correct legal procedure, one of the temple guards thought he was being disrespectful. The guard slapped Jesus. However, Jesus knew the law well and spoke truthfully. There were no witnesses accusing him, and no evidence was presented against him.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2323. If I have spoken, &c.--"if I spoke" evil, in reply to the high priest. (Also see on Mr 14:54.) if well--He does not say "If not" evil, as if His reply were merely unobjectionable: "well" seems to challenge more than this as due to His remonstrance This shows that Mt 5:39 is not to be taken to the letter.Read the comment
