Context of John 10:31
29My Father, who gave them to me, is greater than everyone else, and no one can tear them away from my Father. 30The Father and I are one.” The Jews had again brought some rocks to stone Jesus to death. 32Jesus replied to them, “I’ve shown you many good things that come from the Father. For which of these good things do you want to stone me to death?” 33The Jews answered Jesus, “We’re going to stone you to death, not for any good things you’ve done, but for dishonoring God. You claim to be God, although you’re only a man.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 31The Jews took up stones - To stone him as a blasphemer, Leviticus 24:14-16, because he said he was one with God. The evangelist adds the word again, because they had attempted to do this before, see John 8:59; but it seems they were prevented from doing this now by the following discourse.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 31The Jews took up stones - Stoning was the punishment of a blasphemer, Leviticus 24:14-16. Again - They had before plotted against his life John 5:16, John 5:18, and once at least they had taken up stones to destroy him, John 8:59.Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31-33The people understood what Jesus meant and wanted to kill him (see 10:33). The problem was not that Jesus performed good works, but that he claimed to be God (see 6:42, 60; 7:29–30). Blasphemy (speaking in a way that dishonors God) was punishable by death under the law of Moses. The required punishment was stoning (see Leviticus 24:23; John 8:59).Read the comment
