Context of Job 6:26
24Teach me, and I’ll be silent. Show me where I’ve been wrong. 25How painful an honest discussion can be! In correcting me, you correct yourselves! Do you think my words need correction? Do you think they’re what a desperate person says to the wind? 27Would you also throw dice for an orphan? Would you buy and sell your friend? 28“But now, if you’re willing, look at me. I won’t lie to your face.

Commentaries on Job 6:26
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26Do ye imagine to reprove words - Is it some expressions which in my hurry, and under the pressure of unprecedented affliction, I have uttered, that ye catch at? You can find no flaw in my conduct; would ye make me an Offender for a Word? Why endeavor to take such advantage of a man who complains in the bitterness of his heart, through despair of life and happiness?Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 26Do ye imagine to reprove words? - A considerable variety of interpretation has occurred in regard to this verse. Dr. Good, following Schultens, supposes that the word translated wind here רוּח rûach means sighs, or groans, and renders it, Would ye then take up words for reproof, The mere venting the means of despair? But Rosenmuller has well remarked that the word never has this signification. Noyes renders it, Do ye mean to censure words? The words of a…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-30Verses 14-30 In his prosperity Job formed great expectations from his friends, but now was disappointed. This he compares to the failing of brooks in summer. Those who rest their expectations on the creature, will find it fail when it should help them; whereas those who make God their confidence, have help in the time of need, He 4:16. Those who make gold their hope, sooner or later will be ashamed of it, and of their confidence in it. It is our wisdom to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-27Job and his friends might have shared a covenant (special agreement) of loyalty and faith (Hebrew khesed; see Genesis 21:23; Exodus 15:13; 1 Chronicles 16:34). This bond would have made them like brothers, those who protect, and friends he could trust (Job 6:14–15; 6:21–23, 27). If they were in a covenant with one another, Job was accusing his friends of violating their covenant with him.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2626. Do you imagine--or, "mean." to reprove words and (to reprove) the speeches of one desperate, (which are) as wind?--mere nothings, not to be so narrowly taken to task? Umbreit not so well takes the Hebrew for "as wind," as "sentiments"; making formal "sentiments" antithetical to mere "speeches," and supplying, not the word "reprove," but "would you regard," from the first clause.Read the comment
