Context of Ezekiel 35:3
1The Lord spoke his word to me. He said, 2“Son of man, turn to Mount Seir, and prophesy against it. Tell it, ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: I’m against you, Mount Seir. I will use my power against you, and you will become a wasteland. 4I will turn your cities into ruins, and you will become a wasteland. Then you will know that I am the Lord. 5“ ‘You have always been an enemy of Israel. You deserted the people of Israel in battle when they were in trouble during their final punishment.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-15This message of judgment is directed to Edom, Israel’s neighbor to the southeast. It is also called Mount Seir, the main mountain region of Edom. Edom stands as a symbol of all Israel’s enemies. For example, Edom rejoiced when Israel fell (Ezekiel 36:2; see also 25:12–14). When Babylon destroyed Judah, Edom may have thought it had a chance to grow stronger. However, the Lord said that its success would not last long.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. most desolate--literally, "desolation and desolateness" (Jr 49:17, &c.). It is only in their national character of foes to God's people, that the Edomites are to be utterly destroyed. A remnant of Edom, as of the other heathen, is to be "called by the name of God" (Am 9:12).Read the comment
