Context of Deuteronomy 15:6
4In any case, there shouldn’t be any poor people among you, because the Lord your God will certainly bless you in the land he is giving you as your own possession. 5He will bless you only if you listen carefully to the Lord your God and faithfully obey all these commands I’m giving you today. The Lord your God will bless you, as he promised. You will make loans to many nations, but you will not have to borrow from any of them. You will rule many nations, but no nation will ever rule you. 7This is what you must do whenever there are poor Israelites in one of your cities in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 8Be generous to these poor people, and freely lend them as much as they need. Never be hard-hearted and tight-fisted with them.

Commentaries on Deuteronomy 15:6
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-11Verses 1-11 The year of release is no doubt identical with the sabbatical year of the earlier legislation (Exodus 23:10 ff, and Leviticus 25:2 ff), the command of the older legislation being here amplified. The release was probably for the year, not total and final, and had reference only to loans lent because of poverty (compare Deuteronomy 15:4, Deuteronomy 15:7). Yet even so the law was found to be too stringent for the avarice of the people, because…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6you will lend to many nations: If Israel obeyed God, the nation would become prosperous (having great wealth and resources). It would be able to lend to other nations instead of borrowing from them. This prosperity would show that God was keeping his promise to Abraham. God had promised that Abraham’s descendants would be a blessing to all nations (Genesis 12:2–3; 17:4–6; 26:3–4).Read the comment
