Context of 2 Chronicles 24:5
3Jehoiada got Joash two wives, and Joash had sons and daughters. 4After this, Joash wanted to renovate the Lord’s temple. He gathered the priests and the Levites and said to them, “Go to the cities of Judah, and collect money throughout Israel to repair the temple of your God every year. Do it immediately!” But the Levites didn’t do it immediately. 6So the king called for the chief priest Jehoiada and asked him, “Why didn’t you require the Levites to bring the contributions from Judah and Jerusalem? The Lord’s servant Moses and the assembly had required Israel to give contributions for the use of the tent containing the words of God’s promise.” 7(The sons of that wicked woman Athaliah had broken into God’s temple and used all the holy things of the Lord’s temple ⌞to worship⌟ other gods—the Baals.)

Commentaries on 2 Chronicles 24:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Gather of all Israel money - As the temple was the property of the whole nation, and the services performed in it were for the salvation of the people at large, it was right that each should come forward on an occasion of this kind, and lend a helping hand. This is the first instance of such a general collection for building or repairing a house of God. From year to year - It must have been in a state of great dilapidation, when it required such annual…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-8We do not know when Joash first tried to refurbish the temple. After failing to raise funds the first time, Joash called Jehoiada again in the twenty-third year of his reign (2 Kings 12:6). The priests might not have acted because they disagreed about who should fund and oversee the restoration. The king criticized Jehoiada for not acting and suggested a plan to make the offering more voluntary.Read the comment
