Context of 1 Chronicles 11:2
1All Israel gathered around David at Hebron. “We are your own flesh and blood,” they said. “Even in the past when Saul ruled, you were the one who led Israel on its campaigns to war. The Lord your God has said to you, ‘You will be shepherd of my people Israel, the leader of my people Israel.’ ” 3All the leaders of Israel had come to Hebron. David made an agreement with them at Hebron in front of the Lord. So they anointed David king of Israel, as the Lord had spoken through Samuel. 4David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites were living in that region.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-3David first became king of Judah in Hebron and ruled there for seven and a half years (1 Chronicles 3:4; 2 Samuel 5:5). The Chronicler does not include the details of that time (see 2 Samuel 2–4) and instead focuses on David’s 33 and a half years ruling the entire nation. This began with his agreement with all the elders of Israel at Hebron (see 2 Samuel 5:1–5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-31Ch 11:1-3. David Made King. 1. Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron--This event happened on the death of Ish-bosheth (see on 2Sa 5:1). The convention of the estates of the kingdom, the public and solemn homage of the representatives of the people, and the repeated anointing of the new king in their presence and by their direction, seem to have been necessary to the general acknowledgment of the sovereign on the part of the nation…Read the comment
