Context of 1 Chronicles 11:2
1Then all the Israelites came to David at Hebron. They said to him, ‘We all belong to the same family as you do. In the past, even when Saul was our king, you led the Israelites in war. The Lord your God said to you, “You will take care of my people, as a shepherd takes care of his sheep. You will rule over my people, Israel.” ’ 3So King David made an agreement with the leaders of Israel when they came to him at Hebron. They made promises in the Lord's name. Then they anointed David to be king over Israel. The Lord had told Samuel that this would happen. 4David and the whole Israelite army marched to attack Jerusalem. At that time, the city was called Jebus. The people who lived there were called Jebusites.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-3David first became king of Judah in Hebron and ruled there for seven and a half years (1 Chronicles 3:4; 2 Samuel 5:5). The Chronicler does not include the details of that time (see 2 Samuel 2–4) and instead focuses on David’s 33 and a half years ruling the entire nation. This began with his agreement with all the elders of Israel at Hebron (see 2 Samuel 5:1–5).Read the comment
