Context of 1 Peter 2:2
1So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. 4As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,

Commentaries on 1 Peter 2:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2As new-born babes - In the preceding chapter, 1 Peter 1:23, the apostle states that they had been born again; and as the new-born infant desires that aliment which nature has provided for it, so they, being born again - born from above, should as earnestly require that heavenly nourishment which is suited to their new nature; and this the apostle calls the sincere milk of the word, , or, as some translate, the rational unadulterated milk; i.e. the pure…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2As new-born babes - The phrase used here would properly denote those which were just born, and hence Christians who had just begun the spiritual life. See the word explained in the notes at 2 Timothy 3:15. It is not uncommon, in the Scriptures, to compare Christians with little children. See the notes at Matthew 18:3, for the reasons of this comparison. Compare the 1 Corinthians 3:2 note; Hebrews 5:12, Hebrews 5:14 notes. Desire the sincere milk of the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2Christians have been "born again" and should be like newborn babies, who naturally and regularly crave pure spiritual milk (1:23). In other places in the New Testament, milk (in contrast to solid food) represents basic Christian teachings (1 Corinthians 3:2; Hebrews 5:12–13). But this does not mean that the people Peter wrote to were new believers. Here, milk most likely refers to God’s word in general.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. new-born babes--altogether without "guile" (1Pe 2:1). As long as we are here we are "babes," in a specially tender relation to God (Is 40:11). The childlike spirit is indispensable if we would enter heaven. "Milk" is here not elementary truths in contradistinction to more advanced Christian truths, as in 1Co 3:2; He 5:12, 13; but in contrast to "guile, hypocrisies," &c. (1Pe 2:1); the simplicity of Christian doctrine in general to the childlike spirit…Read the comment
