Context of Romans 6:3
1Someone might say, ‘Perhaps we should continue to do wrong things. Then God can be kind to us in more and more ways.’ 2No! Certainly we should not do that! Sin does not rule our lives any longer. That old life is dead! So it is not right that we should continue to do wrong things. Remember what your baptism shows: When they baptized you, it shows that you are united with Christ Jesus. It also shows that, because Christ died, your old life also died. 4Your baptism shows that they buried you, just like they buried Christ after his death. It is like you died with him and they buried you with him. Because of that, God will also raise us, just as he raised Christ from death. God, the Father, is so great and powerful that he raised Christ to a new life. That means that we also can live our lives in a new way. 5We have become united with Christ, and we have died like he died. Because of that, we will also be united with him in his new life. Just like Christ rose, we also will rise to a new life.

- Romans 6:16Remember this: When you agree to serve someone as a slave, you have to obey that person as your master. You may choose to serve sin as your master. If you do that, you will die. Or you may choose to obey God. If you do that, you will live in a way that is right.
- Romans 7:1My Christian friends, you know about laws. You know that we have to obey them. The laws have authority over someone while they are still alive.

He is choosing to do what is right. That saves you, because Jesus Christ became alive again after his death.
- Romans 6:4Your baptism shows that they buried you, just like they buried Christ after his death. It is like you died with him and they buried you with him. That means that we also can live our lives in a new way.

- Galatians 2:20Christ died on the cross on my behalf. It is like I died there with him. So I do not live my own life any more. Instead, Christ lives in me. The life that I live now in my body, I live because I trust what he has done for me. He has loved me so much that he died on my behalf.
Commentaries on Romans 6:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3Know ye not, etc. - Every man who believes the Christian religion, and receives baptism as the proof that he believes it, and has taken up the profession of it, is bound thereby to a life of righteousness. To be baptized into Christ, is to receive the doctrine of Christ crucified, and to receive baptism as a proof of the genuineness of that faith, and the obligation to live according to its precepts. Baptized into his death? - That, as Jesus Christ in his…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3Know ye not - This is a further appeal to the Christian profession, and the principles involved in it, in answer to the objection. The simple argument in this verse and the two following is, that by our very profession made in baptism, we have renounced sin, and have pledged ourselves to live to God. So many of us - All who were baptized; that is, all professed Christians. As this renunciation of sin had been thus made by all who professed religion, so…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 3-10Verses 3-10 Baptism teaches the necessity of dying to sin, and being as it were buried from all ungodly and unholy pursuits, and of rising to walk with God in newness of life. Unholy professors may have had the outward sign of a death unto sin, and a new birth unto righteousness, but they never passed from the family of Satan to that of God. The corrupt nature, called the old man, because derived from our first father Adam, is crucified with Christ, in…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3Baptism is the ceremony that initiates a person into the Christian faith (see Acts 2:38, 41). It sometimes represents the whole conversion experience. Paul describes baptism as the way Christians unite to Christ in his death and resurrection (see also Romans 6:4). However, baptism has no value apart from faith.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ--compare 1Co 10:2. were baptized into his death?--sealed with the seal of heaven, and as it were formally entered and articled, to all the benefits and all the obligations of Christian discipleship in general, and of His death in particular. And since He was "made sin" and "a curse for us" (2Co 5:21; Ga 5:13), "bearing our sins in His own body on the tree," and "rising again for our…Read the comment
