Context of Proverbs 26:20
18A crazy man may shoot sharp arrows to kill people. 19If a person deceives his friend and then laughs about it, he is as bad as that crazy person. Without wood, a fire stops burning. When people do not tell their friends' secrets, quarrels stop. 21But when a fire has wood, it continues to burn. When people love to quarrel, there will always be arguments. 22We love to hear other people's secrets. They seem like good food that we can really enjoy.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out - The tale-receiver and the tale-bearer are the agents of discord. If none received the slander in the first instance, it could not be propagated. Hence our proverb, "The receiver is as bad as the thief." And our laws treat them equally; for the receiver of stolen goods, knowing them to be stolen, is hanged, as well as he who stole them.Read the comment
