Context of Matthew 25:36
34The king will say to those people who are on his right side, “Come here. My Father has been good to you. He has prepared a place for you in his kingdom. That kingdom has been ready for you since the time that God made the world. 35I was hungry and you gave me some food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me some water to drink. I was visiting your town and you asked me to stay in your home. I did not have enough clothes and you gave me some clothes to wear. I was ill and you took care of me. I was in prison and you came to visit me there.” 37Then the people on the right side will say to the king, “Master, when did we see that you were hungry and give you some food? When did we see that you were thirsty and we gave you some water to drink? 38When did we ask you to stay in our home because you were alone? When did we give you some clothes to wear?

Commentaries on Matthew 25:36
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 36I was sick, and ye visited me - Relieving the strangers, and visiting the sick, were in high estimation among the Jews. One of their sayings on this head is worthy of notice: "He who neglects to visit the sick is like him who has shed blood." That is, as he has neglected, when it was in his power, to preserve life, he is as guilty in the sight of the Lord as he is who has committed murder. See Kypke in loco.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-46Verses 31-46 This is a description of the last judgment. It is as an explanation of the former parables. There is a judgment to come, in which every man shall be sentenced to a state of everlasting happiness, or misery. Christ shall come, not only in the glory of his Father, but in his own glory, as Mediator. The wicked and godly here dwell together, in the same cities, churches, families, and are not always to be known the one from the other; such are…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 35-36The actions mentioned here are often called "deeds of mercy." These were acts of kindness toward those in need (see Isaiah 58:1–12; Ezekiel 18:7; James 1:26–27). These good deeds are not efforts to earn God's approval. Instead, they come from a love for Christ that results in compassion toward others (see Matthew 6:1–4).Read the comment
