Context of Mark 7:19
17Jesus left the crowd of people and he went into a house. Then his disciples asked him to explain what he had taught. 18Jesus said, ‘I am surprised that you too do not understand what I am saying. You should understand that food will not make people unclean. Food goes into people's bodies from outside. But food does not go into people's minds. It goes into their stomachs and then it passes out of their bodies.’ When Jesus said this, he was teaching that all foods are clean. 20Jesus then said, ‘People become unclean because of what comes out from them, not because of what goes in. 21Evil thoughts come out from people's minds. As a result they do wrong things. They have sex in wrong ways. They rob people. They murder people.

Purging all meats? - For what is separated from the different aliments taken into the stomach, and thrown out of the body, is the innutritious parts of all the meats that are eaten; and thus they are purged, nothing being left behind but what is proper for the support of the body.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-23Verses 14-23 Our wicked thoughts and affections, words and actions, defile us, and these only. As a corrupt fountain sends forth corrupt streams, so does a corrupt heart send forth corrupt reasonings, corrupt appetites and passions, and all the wicked words and actions that come from them. A spiritual understanding of the law of God, and a sense of the evil of sin, will cause a man to seek for the grace of the Holy Spirit, to keep down the evil thoughts…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-23The second argument of Jesus against the Pharisees was a proverb he told the crowd. Later, in a private setting, Jesus explained it to his disciples (7:17–23). It concerns moral distinctions about eating (rules about what is right or wrong to eat). Eating affects the system that processes food, but moral issues involve the heart. The heart is a metaphor for where a person makes moral decisions. How a person eats (with ceremonially clean or unclean hands)…Read the comment
