Context of Mark 3:31
29But God will never forgive people who say bad things against the Holy Spirit. Those people will always be guilty of a terrible sin.’ 30Jesus said that to the teachers of God's Law, because they had said, ‘Jesus has a bad spirit in him.’ Then, Jesus' mother and his brothers arrived and they stood outside the house. They sent someone into the house with a message. They wanted Jesus to come out to speak to them. 32A crowd of people was sitting around Jesus. Somebody said to him, ‘Look! Your mother and brothers are outside. They are looking for you.’ 33Jesus replied, ‘I will tell you who my mother and brothers really are.’

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-35Verses 31-35 It is a great comfort to all true Christians, that they are dearer to Christ than mother, brother, or sister as such, merely as relations in the flesh would have been, even had they been holy. Blessed be God, this great and gracious privilege is ours even now; for though Christ's bodily presence cannot be enjoyed by us, his spiritual presence is not denied us.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31-35Mark returns to the story from 3:20–21. Your mother and brothers: Many people understand the brothers of Jesus to be children born to Joseph and Mary after Jesus was born (see also 6:3; Matthew 1:25; 12:46; John 19:26–27). Some interpreters think they were Joseph’s children from an earlier marriage or the cousins of Jesus. They hold this view because of the Roman Catholic belief that Mary remained a virgin for her whole life.Read the comment
