Context of Mark 10:35
33‘Listen!’ he said to them. ‘We are going to Jerusalem. There, someone will give the Son of Man to the leaders of the priests and to the teachers of God's Law. These Jewish leaders will decide that he must die. Then they will put him under the power of people who are not Jews. 34Those people will laugh at him. They will spit at him. They will hit him with whips. Then they will kill him. But after three days, he will become alive again.’ James and John, who were Zebedee's sons, came to Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ they said, ‘we want to ask you for something. Please do it for us.’ 36‘What do you want me to do for you?’ Jesus asked them. 37They said to him, ‘When you are king, we want to rule with you. One of us will sit at your right side and the other one at your left side.’

Commentaries on Mark 10:35
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 35And James and John - come unto him - The request here mentioned, Matthew says, Matthew 20:20, was made by Salome their mother; the two places may be easily reconciled thus: - The mother introduced them, and made the request as if from herself; Jesus knowing whence it had come, immediately addressed himself to James and John, who were standing by; and the mother is no farther concerned in the business. See the note on Matthew 20:20.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 35-45Verses 35-45 See the notes at Matthew 20:20-28. Mark 10:35 And James and John came unto him - They did this through the instrumentality of their mother. They did not come in “person,” but they got their mother to make the request for them. Compare the notes at Matthew 20:20.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-45Verses 32-45 Christ's going on with his undertaking for the salvation of mankind, was, is, and will be, the wonder of all his disciples. Worldly honour is a glittering thing, with which the eyes of Christ's own disciples have many times been dazzled. Our care must be, that we may have wisdom and grace to know how to suffer with him; and we may trust him to provide what the degrees of our glory shall be. Christ shows them that dominion was generally abused…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 35-45After Jesus predicts his suffering for the third time (10:32–33), the disciples fail again (see 8:31–33; 9:31–34). The first part of the account involves the foolish request of James and John (10:35–37). Jesus responds to them (10:38–40). Then Jesus explains to the other disciples what greatness and leadership in the kingdom of God mean (10:41–44). Jesus gave the greatest example of humble service(10:45). This example concludes the account.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3535. And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying--Matthew (Mt 20:20) says their "mother came to Him with her sons, worshipping Him and desiring," &c. (Compare Mt 27:56, with Mr 15:40). Salome was her name (Mr 16:1). We cannot be sure with which of the parties the movement originated; but as our Lord, even in Matthew's account, addresses Himself to James and John, taking no account of the mother, it is likely the mother was merely set on…Read the comment
