Context of Luke 20:44
42David himself said this in the book called Psalms: “The Lord God said to my Lord, Sit at my right side until I win against your enemies. 43Then you will be able to put your feet on them.” You see here that David calls the Messiah his Lord. So can you really say that the Messiah is David's son?’ 45All the people were listening to Jesus. Jesus then said to his disciples, 46‘Be careful not to do the same as the teachers of God's Law. They want people to think that they are important. So they walk about in beautiful long clothes. They like people to praise them in the market place. They choose to sit in the best seats in the meeting place. They like to sit in the most important places at special meals.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 39-47Verses 39-47 The scribes commended the reply Christ made to the Sadducees about the resurrection, but they were silenced by a question concerning the Messiah. Christ, as God, was David's Lord; but Christ, as man, was David's son. The scribes would receive the severest judgement for defrauding the poor widows, and for their abuse of religion, particularly of prayer, which they used as a pretence for carrying on worldly and wicked plans. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 44Jesus asked why King David called his son (meaning his descendant) his Lord. The implied answer was that the Christ was more than a human king from David's family line. He is Lord of all (see 2:11; Acts 10:36). Psalm 110:1 became an important passage for the apostles. It confirms that Jesus is the Son of God (see Mark 14:62; Acts 2:34; 7:56; Romans 8:34; 1 Corinthians 15:25; Ephesians 1:20; Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 1:3, 13; 8:1; 10:12–13; 1 Peter 3:22…Read the comment

The difficulty can only be solved by the higher and lower--the divine and human natures of our Lord (Mt 1:23).
