Context of Luke 14:34
32No, I cannot do it. I know I cannot beat the other king.” So, while the stronger king is far away, he will send a man to him with a message. He will tell the other king that he does not want to fight. He will ask him what he can do so that they become friends together.’ 33Jesus then said, ‘It is like that for all of you, if you want to be my disciples. You must leave everything that you have behind you. Remember this. Salt is good. But if it is not salty any more, it is no longer any good. You cannot make it salty again. 35You would not even put it on your field. It cannot make the soil good. You would just throw it away. You have ears. So listen well to what I say.’

On the subject referred to this place from Luke 14:23, Compel them to come in, which has been adduced to favor religious persecution, I find the following sensible and just observations in Dr. Dodd's notes. "1st. Persecution for conscience' sake, that is, inflicting penalty upon men merely for their religious principles or worship, is plainly founded on a supposition that one man has a…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 25-35Verses 25-35 Though the disciples of Christ are not all crucified, yet they all bear their cross, and must bear it in the way of duty. Jesus bids them count upon it, and then consider of it. Our Saviour explains this by two similitudes; the former showing that we must consider the expenses of our religion; the latter, that we must consider the perils of it. Sit down and count the cost; consider it will cost the mortifying of sin, even the most beloved…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34Salt … if the salt loses its savor: Sodium chloride cannot actually lose its saltiness. Jesus might be speaking hypothetically (if salt were to lose), or he might be referring to a combination of minerals that included salt. The salt around the Dead Sea was a mixture of sodium chloride and other minerals. If the sodium chloride dissolved or was removed, the remaining material still looked like salt but no longer tasted salty.Read the comment
