Context of Jude 1:21
19It is people like this who cause you to argue with one another, so that you belong to separate groups. Their thoughts belong to this world. They do not have God's Spirit in them. 20But you, my friends, have believed the message that comes from God himself. So you must help one another to trust God more and more. Pray to God with the help of the Holy Spirit. Continue to live in a way that shows God's love. As you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to come, remember that he is very kind. Because of that, you will have life with God for ever. 22Help those people who do not know whether to trust God. Be kind to them. 23Some people are in great danger. You must save them from the fire of God's punishment. Also be kind to people who have done wicked and disgusting things. But be careful! Do not let their sins make you bad too.

Commentaries on Jude 1:21
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21Keep yourselves in the love of God - By building up yourselves on your most holy faith, and praying in the Holy Ghost; for without this we shall soon lose the love of God. Looking for the mercy of our Lord - For although they were to build themselves up, and to pray in the Holy Ghost, and keep themselves in the love of God, yet this building, praying, and keeping, cannot merit heaven; for, after all their diligence, earnestness, self-denial, watching…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21Keep yourselves in the love of God - Still adverting to their own agency. On the duty here enjoined, see the notes at John 15:9. The phrase “the love of God” may mean either God‘s love to us, or our love to him. The latter appears, however, to be the sense here, because it is not a subject which could be enjoined, that we should keep up “God‘s love to us.” That is a point over which we can have no control, except so far as it may be the result of our…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-23Verses 17-23 Sensual men separate from Christ, and his church, and join themselves to the devil, the world, and the flesh, by ungodly and sinful practices. That is infinitely worse than to separate from any branch of the visible church on account of opinions, or modes and circumstances of outward government or worship. Sensual men have not the spirit of holiness, which whoever has not, does not belong to Christ. The grace of faith is most holy, as it…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17-23After condemning the false teachers, Jude again encourages his readers directly (see 1:3–4). The apostles had warned them about false teachings (1:17–19). They should support each other in their faith (1:20–21). They should help those who might be misled by the false teachers (1:22–23).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2121. In Jude 20, 21, Jude combines the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost: and faith, hope, and love. Keep yourselves--not in your own strength, but "in the love of God," that is, God's love to you and all His believing children, the only guarantee for their being kept safe. Man's need of watching is implied; at the same time he cannot keep himself, unless God in His love keep him. looking for--in hope. the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ--to be fully…Read the comment
