Context of John 8:36
34Jesus answered them, ‘I tell you this: Everyone who does wrong things is a slave to sin. 35A slave does not belong to a family for ever. But a son does belong to a family for ever. So, if the Son makes you free, you will really be free. 37I know that you belong to Abraham's family. But you are looking for a way to kill me. That is because you have no place in yourselves for my words. 38I speak about the things that my Father has shown me. You do the things that you have heard from your father.’

Shall make you free - Shall deliver you from the bondage and dominion of sin. Free indeed - Truly and really free. You shall be blessed with the most valuable freedom; not from the chains and oppressions of earthly masters and monarchs, but from the bondage of sin.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-36Verses 30-36 Such power attended our Lord's words, that many were convinced, and professed to believe in him. He encouraged them to attend his teaching, rely on his promises, and obey his commands, notwithstanding all temptations to evil. Thus doing, they would be his disciples truly; and by the teaching of his word and Spirit, they would learn where their hope and strength lay. Christ spoke of spiritual liberty; but carnal hearts feel no other grievances…Read the comment
