Context of John 18:10
8Jesus replied, ‘I have told you already, that is who I am. Since it is me that you are looking for, let these other men go.’ 9Jesus said this because earlier he had said, ‘I have lost none of those people that you gave to me.’ This made what he had spoken earlier really happen. Simon Peter had a sword. He took hold of it and he attacked the servant of the leader of the priests. He cut off the servant's right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. 11Then Jesus said to Peter, ‘Put your sword away in its place! My Father has decided what great pain I must have. I will obey him completely.’ 12The group of soldiers, with their captain and the Jewish officers, took hold of Jesus. They tied him with ropes.

Commentaries on John 18:10
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10Having a sword - See the note on Luke 22:36. Cut off his right ear - He probably designed to have cloven his scull in two, but God turned it aside, and only permitted the ear to be taken off; and this he would not have suffered, but only that he might have the opportunity of giving them a most striking proof of his Divinity in working an astonishing miracle on the occasion: see the notes on Matthew 26:51-56; (note). The other three evangelists mention…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10See the notes at Matthew 26:51-52. The servant‘s name was Malchus - His name is mentioned by neither of the other evangelists, nor is it said by the other evangelists who was the disciple that gave the blow. It is probable that both Peter and the servant were alive when the other gospels were written.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-11Simon Peter drew his sword: This was a short sword or long knife, usually worn with everyday clothes. The Hebrew name Malchus means "king." John may have included this detail as a subtle wordplay pointing to the true identity of Jesus (see 18:36–37; 19:19). Put your sword back: The mission of Jesus was not to fight for his life, but to die for ours.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 10-1110-11. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus--None of the other Evangelists mention the name either of the ardent disciple or of his victim. John being "known to the high priest" (Joh 18:15), the mention of the servant's name by him is quite natural, and an interesting mark of truth in a small matter. As to the right ear, specified both here and in Luke (Lu…Read the comment
