Context of Job 38:11
9I caused the clouds to come over the sea. I covered it with complete darkness. 10I put a border around the sea. I locked it in its place. I said to the sea, “This is as far as you can come. You may come no further. Your powerful waves must stop there!” 12But you, Job, did you ever command the morning to begin? No! You have never in your whole life told the sun when it should rise. 13You have not told the light of day to cover the earth. You have not told it to chase away the wicked things that happen in the night.

Commentaries on Job 38:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Hitherto shalt thou come - Thus far shall thy flux and reflux extend. The tides are marvellously limited and regulated, not only by the lunar and solar attractions, but by the quantum of time also which is required to remove any part of the earth's surface from under the immediate attractive influence of the sun and moon. And this regulation takes place by means of the rotation of the earth round its own axis, which causes one thousand and forty-two miles…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11And said, Hitherto shalt thou come - This is a most sublime expression, and its full force can be felt only by one who has stood on the shores of the ocean, and seen its mighty waves roll toward the beach as if in their pride they would sweep everything away, and how they are checked by the barrier which God has made. A voice seems to say to them that they may roll in their pride and grandeur so far, but no further. No increase of their force or numbers…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-11Verses 4-11 For the humbling of Job, God here shows him his ignorance, even concerning the earth and the sea. As we cannot find fault with God's work, so we need not fear concerning it. The works of his providence, as well as the work of creation, never can be broken; and the work of redemption is no less firm, of which Christ himself is both the Foundation and the Corner-stone. The church stands as firm as the earth.Read the comment
