Context of Job 2:6
4Satan answered the Lord, ‘A man will always take care of his own body. He would do anything to save his own life. 5So now cause Job to have great pain in his own body. Then he will certainly curse you very strongly.’ So the Lord said to Satan, ‘I agree to give you power over Job himself. But you must not cause his death.’ 7So Satan went away. He caused Job to have boils all over his body. They hurt him everywhere, from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head. 8Job was very upset and he sat down among some ashes. He used a piece of a broken pot to remove the bad bits of skin.

The original, שמר נפשו naphsho shemor, may be translated, keep his soul; but the word also signifies life; yet in the hands of the destroyer the life of this holy man is placed! How astonishing is the economy of salvation! It is so managed, by the unlimited power and skill of God, that the grand adversary of…Read the comment

The keen sorrows which Job afterward endured showed the malignancy of the tempter; evinced his ingenuity in inflicting pain, and his knowledge of what thc human frame…Read the comment
