Context of Acts 20:4
2He visited many places in that region. He spoke to the believers in each place. He helped them to be strong. After that, he arrived in Greece. 3Paul stayed in Greece for three months. One day, he was preparing to travel to Syria by ship. But then he heard news that some Jews wanted to kill him on the journey. So he decided to travel through Macedonia and return to Jerusalem. These are the men who went with Paul: Sopater, the son of Pyrrhus, from Berea; Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe; Timothy; Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia region. 5These men had all left by ship before we did. When they arrived in Troas, they waited for us there. 6As for us, we sailed by ship from Philippi, after the festival when the Jews eat flat bread. After five days we arrived in Troas. We met the other men there and we all stayed there for seven days.

Commentaries on Acts 20:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4And there accompanied him - Rather, says Bishop Pearce, there followed him as far as to Asia; for they were not in his company till he set sail from Philippi, and came to them at Troas, in Asia, whither they had gone before, and where they tarried for him, Acts 20:5. Into Asia - ; These words are wanting in two MSS., Erpen, the Ethiopic, Coptic, and Vulgate. Some think that they embarrass this place; for how these could accompany him into Asia, and go…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4And there accompanied him - It was usual for some of the disciples to attend the apostles in their journeys. Sopater of Berea - Perhaps the same person who, in Romans 16:21, is called Sosipater, and who is there said to have been a kinsman of Paul. Aristarchus - Acts 19:29. Gaius of Derbe…Read the comment

But that they were the same person seems more probable. of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus--(See on Ac 19:29). and Secundus--of whom nothing else is known. Gaius of…Read the comment
