Context of Luke 7:6
4But they, being come to Jesus, besought him diligently, saying, He is worthy to whom thou shouldest grant this, 5for he loves our nation, and himself has built the synagogue for us. And Jesus went with them. But already, when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent to him friends, saying to him, Lord, do not trouble thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof. 7Wherefore neither did I count myself worthy to come to thee. But say by a word and my servant shall be healed. 8For I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers, and I say to this [one], Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my bondman, Do this, and he does [it].

Commentaries on Luke 7:6
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6I am not worthy to have You come under my roof: The man was probably trying to respect Jewish customs. Faithful Jews would not enter the home of a Gentile, because they believed this would make them ceremonially unclean (see Acts 10:28; 11:12). The centurion might also have been acknowledging the greater status of Jesus.Read the comment
