Context of Leviticus 19:18
16Thou shalt not go about as a talebearer among thy people; thou shalt not stand up against the life of thy neighbour: I am Jehovah. 17Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart; thou shalt earnestly rebuke thy neighbour, lest thou bear sin on account of him. Thou shalt not avenge thyself, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am Jehovah. 19My statutes shall ye observe. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with another sort; thou shalt not sow thy field with seed of two sorts; and a garment woven of two materials shall not come upon thee. 20And if a man lie with a woman for copulation, and she is a bondwoman betrothed to a husband, but not at all ransomed, nor hath freedom been given to her, there shall be a chastisement: they shall not be put to death, for she was not free.

Commentaries on Leviticus 19:18
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18love your neighbor as yourself: This is a key principle in biblical ethics found in both the Old and New Testaments (see Matt 22:39; Mark 12:31; Luke 10:27; Romans 13:8–9; Galatians 5:14; James 2:8). It includes loving foreigners (Leviticus 19:34; compare Luke 10:30–37). In contrast, hate can lead to grudges and violence (see 1 John 2:10–11; 4:20).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1818. thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself--The word "neighbour" is used as synonymous with "fellow creature." The Israelites in a later age restricted its meaning as applicable only to their own countrymen. This narrow interpretation was refuted by our Lord in a beautiful parable (Lu 10:30-37).Read the comment
