Context of Acts 18:25
23And having stayed [there] some time, he went forth, passing in order through the country of Galatia and Phrygia, establishing all the disciples. 24But a certain Jew, Apollos by name, an Alexandrian by race, an eloquent man, who was mighty in the scriptures, arrived at Ephesus. He was instructed in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in his spirit, he spoke and taught exactly the things concerning Jesus, knowing only the baptism of John. 26And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. And Aquila and Priscilla, having heard him, took him to [them] and unfolded to him the way of God more exactly. 27And when he purposed to go into Achaia, the brethren wrote to the disciples engaging them to receive him, who, being come, contributed much to those who believed through grace.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 25This man was instructed in the way of the Lord - ; He was catechized, initiated, in the way, the doctrine, of Jesus as the Christ. Being fervent in the spirit - Being full of zeal to propagate the truth of God, he taught diligently, accurately, (so the word should be translated), the things of Christ as far as he could know them through the ministry of John the Baptist; for it appears he knew nothing more of Christ than what John preached. Some suppose we…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 25This man was instructed - Greek: was catechised. He was instructed, in some degree, into the knowledge of the Christian religion. By whom this was done we have no information. In the way of the Lord - The word “way” often refers to doctrine, Matthew 21:32. It means here that he had been correctly taught in regard to the Messiah, yet his knowledge was imperfect, Acts 18:26. The amount of his knowledge seems to have been: (1) He had correct views of the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-28Verses 24-28 Apollos taught in the gospel of Christ, as far as John's ministry would carry him, and no further. We cannot but think he had heard of Christ's death and resurrection, but he was not informed as to the mystery of them. Though he had not the miraculous gifts of the Spirit, as the apostles, he made use of the gifts he had. The dispensation of the Spirit, whatever the measure of it may be, is given to every man to profit withal. He was a lively…Read the comment

It was known for its strong tradition of public speaking and for the writings of Philo, a Jewish philosopher. Apollos was a skilled speaker and knew the Scriptures (the Old Testament) very well. However, his understanding of Jesus and the Holy Spirit was incomplete. He did not yet understand that believers can experience the Holy Spirit’s power in their lives now. Priscilla and Aquila kindly took…Read the comment

Jew named Apollos--a contraction from Apollonius. born at Alexandria--the celebrated city of Egypt on the southeastern shore of the Mediterranean, called after its founder, Alexander the Great.
