Context of Acts 18:17
15but if it be questions about words, and names, and the law that ye have, see to it yourselves; [for] I do not intend to be judge of these things. 16And he drove them from the judgment-seat. And having all laid hold on Sosthenes the ruler of the synagogue, they beat him before the judgment-seat. And Gallio troubled himself about none of these things. 18And Paul, having yet stayed [there] many days, took leave of the brethren and sailed thence to Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila, having shorn his head in Cenchrea, for he had a vow; 19and he arrived at Ephesus, and left them there. But entering himself into the synagogue he reasoned with the Jews.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes - As this man is termed the chief ruler of the synagogue, it is probable that he had lately succeeded Crispus in that office; see Acts 18:8; and that he was known either to have embraced Christianity, or to have favored the cause of St. Paul. He is supposed to be the same person whom St. Paul associates with himself in the first epistle to the Corinthians, 1 Corinthians 1:1. Crispus might have been removed from his…Read the comment

Took Sosthenes - As he was the chief ruler of the synagogue, he had probably been a leader in the opposition to Paul, and in the prosecution. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-17Verses 12-17 Paul was about to show that he did not teach men to worship God contrary to law; but the judge would not allow the Jews to complain to him of what was not within his office. It was right in Gallio that he left the Jews to themselves in matters relating to their religion, but yet would not let them, under pretence of that, persecute another. But it was wrong to speak slightly of a law and religion which he might have known to be of God, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17The Greeks probably beat Sosthenes to show their anger towards the Jews. It is also possible that the Jews attacked their own synagogue leader because he failed to defend them. Sosthenes might be the same person Paul later calls "our brother" in 1 Corinthians 1:1, but this is uncertain since the name was common.Read the comment
