Context of Romans 9:6

4They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple service, and the promises. 5The ancestors are theirs, and from them, by physical descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, praised forever. Amen. Now it is not as though the word of God has failed, because not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7Neither is it the case that all of Abraham’s children are his descendants. On the contrary, your offspring will be traced through Isaac. 8That is, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but the children of the promise are considered to be the offspring.

Commentaries on Romans 9:6

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect - A Jew might have objected, as in Romans 3:3; : "Is not God bound by his faithfulness to continue the Jews as his peculiar Church and people, notwithstanding the infidelity of the major part of them? If they are brought to a level with the Gentiles, will it not follow that God hath failed in the performance of his promise to Abraham? Genesis 17:7, Genesis 17:8; : I will establish my covenant between me…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-13Verses 6-13 The rejection of the Jews by the gospel dispensation, did not break God's promise to the patriarchs. The promises and threatenings shall be fulfilled. Grace does not run in the blood; nor are saving benefits always found with outward church privileges. Not only some of Abraham's seed were chosen, and others not, but God therein wrought according to the counsel of his own will. God foresaw both Esau and Jacob as born in sin, by nature children…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6are Israel: The word Israel can have more than one meaning. It can refer to all the physical descendants of Jacob, that is, the people of Israel by birth. However, in the later part of the Old Testament and in Jewish teaching, a new idea developed. This idea is often called a “remnant,” meaning a smaller group within Israel who remain faithful to God (see Isaiah 11:10–16). In the New Testament, Israel can sometimes have a broader meaning. On at least one…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 66. Not as though the word of God had taken none effect--"hath fallen to the ground," that is, failed: compare Lu 16:17, Greek. for they are not all Israel which are of Israel--better, "for not all they which are of Israel are Israel." Here the apostle enters upon the profound subject of Election, the treatment of which extends to the end of the eleventh chapter--"Think not that I mourn over the total loss of Israel; for that would involve the failure of…Read the comment
• Calvin’s Commentaries · v. 66. Not however, etc. Paul had been carried away by the ardour of his wish, as it were, into an excess of feeling, (in ecstasin,) but now, returning to discharge his office as a teacher, he adds what may be viewed as somewhat qualifying what he had said, as though he would restrain immoderate grief. And inasmuch as by deploring the ruin of his own nation, this inconsistency seems to follow, that the covenant made by God with the seed of Abraham had failed…Read the comment
