Context of Proverbs 26:19
17A person who is passing by and meddles in a quarrel that’s not his is like one who grabs a dog by the ears. 18Like a madman who throws flaming darts and deadly arrows, so is the person who deceives his neighbor and says, “I was only joking!” 20Without wood, fire goes out; without a gossip, conflict dies down. 21As charcoal for embers and wood for fire, so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife.

Commentaries on Proverbs 26:19
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19Am not I in sport? - How many hearts have been made sad, and how many reputations have been slain, by this kind of sport! "I designed no harm by what I said;" "It was only in jest," etc. Sportive as such persons may think their conduct to be, it is as ruinous as that of the mad man who shoots arrows, throws firebrands, and projects in all directions instruments of death, so that some are wounded, some burnt, and some slain.Read the comment
