Context of Obadiah 1:16
14Do not stand at the crossroads to cut off their fugitives, and do not hand over their survivors in the day of distress. 15For the day of the Lord is near, against all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; what you deserve will return on your own head. As you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and gulp down and be as though they had never been. 17But there will be a deliverance on Mount Zion, and it will be holy; the house of Jacob will dispossess those who dispossessed them. 18Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire, and the house of Joseph, a burning flame, but the house of Esau will be stubble; Jacob will set them on fire and consume Edom. Therefore no survivor will remain of the house of Esau, for the Lord has spoken.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16For as ye have drunk - This address is to the Jews. As ye have been visited and punished upon my holy mountain in Jerusalem, so shall other nations be punished in their respective countries. See Jeremiah 49:12.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16For as ye have drunk - Revelry always followed pagan victory; often, desecration. The Romans bore in triumph the vessels of the second temple, Nebuchadnezzar carried away the sacred vessels of the first. Edom, in its hatred of God‘s people, doubtless regarded the destruction of Jerusalem, as a victory of polytheism (the gods of the Babylonians, and their own god Coze), over God, as Hyrcanus, in his turn, required them, when conquered, to be circumcised…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-18The law of retribution (lex talionis) means we face the consequences of our actions. Edom's betrayal and pride would lead to her own downfall when vengeance came. Justice would deliver Israel and punish Edom (see also Jeremiah 49:7–22; Ezekiel 32:29; Malachi 1:2–5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1616. ye ... upon my holy mountain--a periphrasis for, "ye Jews" [Maurer], whom Obadiah now by a sudden apostrophe addresses. The clause, "upon My holy mountain," expresses the reason of the vengeance to be taken on Judah's foes; namely, that Jerusalem is God's holy mountain, the seat of His temple, and Judah His covenant-people. Jr 49:12, which is copied from Obadiah, establishes this view (compare 1Pe 4:17). as ye have drunk, &c.--namely, the cup of…Read the comment
