Context of Matthew 27:58
56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons. 57When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body. Then Pilate ordered that it be released. 59So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen, 60and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 57-61Verses 57-61 In the burial of Christ was nothing of pomp or solemnity. Our Lord Jesus, who had no sin of his own, had no grave of his own. The Jews designed that he should have made his grave with the wicked, should have been buried with the thieves with whom he was crucified, but God overruled it, so…Read the comment

Deuteronomy 21:22–23 forbids leaving a body on a cross or gallows overnight. Joseph of Arimathea acted in line with this law when he asked for the body of Jesus. His request also showed his loyalty to Jesus. Pilate ordered: Pilate agreed to Joseph’s request and gave the order. He likely did this because he did not believe…Read the comment
