Context of Mark 5:8

6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before him. 7And he cried out with a loud voice, “What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you before God, don’t torment me!” For he had told him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9“What is your name?” he asked him. “My name is Legion,” he answered him, “because we are many.” 10And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the region.

Son of the Most High God: Evil spirits know who Jesus really is (1:24, 34; 3:11). There was no struggle. Jesus was in control, and the unclean spirit obeyed him. Torture is the final judgment awaiting unclean spirits (Matthew 8:29; Luke 8:31).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. For he said unto him--that is, before the unclean spirit cried out. Come out of the man, unclean spirit!--Ordinarily, obedience to a command of this nature was immediate. But here, a certain delay is permitted, the more signally to manifest the power of Christ and accomplish His purposes.Read the comment
