Context of Acts 21:14
12When we heard this, both we and the local people pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13Then Paul replied, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” Since he would not be persuaded, we said no more except, “The Lord’s will be done.” 15After this we got ready and went up to Jerusalem. 16Some of the disciples from Caesarea also went with us and brought us to Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we were to stay.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14The will of the Lord be done - May that which is most for his glory take place! They plainly saw from the prophecy what would take place, if Paul went to Jerusalem; and every one saw that he had power to go, or not to go.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Would not be persuaded - To remain. He was resolved to go. We ceased - We ceased remonstrating with him, and urging him to remain. The will of the Lord be done - They were now assured that it was the will of God that he should go, and they were now ready to submit to that will. This is an instance and an evidence of true piety. It was the expression of a wish that whatever God might judge to be necessary for the advancement of his cause might take place…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-18Verses 8-18 Paul had express warning of his troubles, that when they came, they might be no surprise or terror to him. The general notice given us, that through much tribulation we must enter into the kingdom of God, should be of the same use to us. Their weeping began to weaken and slacken his resolution Has not our Master told us to take up our cross? It was a trouble to him, that they should so earnestly press him to do that in which he could not…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11-14Despite Agabus’s prediction of suffering and the believers’ begging Paul not to go to Jerusalem, Paul was ready even to die for the sake of the Lord Jesus. Luke emphasizes Paul’s courage, determination, and heroism as a Christian missionary who would let nothing interfere with his mission. See study note on 21:4–6.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 11-1411-14. So shall the Jews bind the man that owneth this girdle, &c.--For though the Romans did it, it was at the Jews' instigation (Ac 21:33; Ac 28:17). Such dramatic methods of announcing important future events would bring the old prophets to remembrance. (Compare Is 20:2, &c.; Jr 13:1, and Eze 5:1, &c.). This prediction and that at Tyre (Ac 21:4) were intended, not to prohibit him from going, but to put his courage to the test and when he stood the…Read the comment
