Context of 1 Timothy 4:9

7But have nothing to do with pointless and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in godliness. 8For the training of the body has limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance. 10For this reason we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. 11Command and teach these things.

No diligence in mere outward things could be of much use. The gain of godliness lies much in the promise; and the promises to godly people relate partly to the life that now is, but especially to the life which is to come: though we lose for Christ, we shall not lose by him.
