Context of Revelation 10:6
4When the seven thunders had spoken, I was about to put it in writing. But I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.” 5Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his right hand to heaven. And he swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and everything in it, the earth and everything in it, and the sea and everything in it: “There will be no more delay! 7But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he begins to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be fulfilled, just as He proclaimed to His servants the prophets.” 8Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, “Go, take the small scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel standing on the sea and on the land.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6By him that liveth for ever and ever - The eternal, self-existent Jehovah, the Maker of all things. That there should be time no longer - That the great counsels relative to the events already predicted should be immediately fulfilled, and that there should be no longer delay. This has no reference to the day of judgment.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6And sware by him that liveth forever and ever - By the ever-living God: a form of an oath in extensive use now. The essential idea in such an oath is an appeal to God; a solemn reference to Him as a witness; an utterance in the presence of Him who is acquainted with the truth or falsehood of what is said, and who will punish him who appeals to him falsely. It is usual, in such an oath, in order to give to it greater solemnity, to refer to some attribute…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6Raising the right hand is common for taking an oath today, but it is rare in the Bible (compare Genesis 14:22; 24:9; Daniel 12:7). When making an oath, Jews were careful not to use God’s name lightly (see Exodus 20:7). Jesus also corrected people who made oaths without sincerity (see Matthew 5:33–37; 23:16–22). When God made an oath, he used his own name, because there is no higher authority (see Genesis 22:16; Psalm 89:35–36; Jeremiah 22:5; Hebrews…Read the comment
