Context of Mark 1:24

22The people were astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out in the synagogue: “What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 25But Jesus rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” 26At this, the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and came out with a loud shriek.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-28Verses 23-28 The devil is an unclean spirit, because he has lost all the purity of his nature, because he acts in direct opposition to the Holy Spirit of God, and by his suggestions defiles the spirits of men. In the Gospels, demons are often associated with disease (9:17, 27; Matthew 17:15) and self-destructive behavior (Mark 1:26; 5:2–5; 9:17–18, 20–22). Demons know who Jesus is (1:34).
