Context of John 5:33
31If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid. 32There is another who testifies about Me, and I know that His testimony about Me is valid. You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. 34Even though I do not accept human testimony, I say these things so that you may be saved. 35John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you were willing for a season to bask in his light.

There are several circumstances in John's character which render his testimony unexceptionable. He is consulted by the very enemies of Christ, as a very holy and extraordinary man. John was an eminent man; many of the Pharisees believed on him; he was candid, unambitious, sincere, and his evidence was impartial. On this Jesus might have rested the proof that he was the Messiah, but he was willing, also, to adduce evidence of a higher order.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-38Verses 30-38 Our Lord returns to his declaration of the entire agreement between the Father and the Son, and declared himself the Son of God. The voice of God, accompanied by the power of the Holy Ghost, thus made…Read the comment
