Context of John 12:14
12The next day the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!” Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, as it is written: 15“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion. See, your King is coming, seated on the colt of a donkey.” 16At first His disciples did not understand these things, but after Jesus was glorified they remembered what had been done to Him, and they realized that these very things had also been written about Him.

John 12:17 Bare record - Testified that he had raised him, and, as was natural, spread the report through the city. This excited much attention, and the people came out in multitudes to meet one who had power to work such miracles. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-19Verses 12-19 Christ's riding in triumph to Jerusalem is recorded by all the evangelists. Many excellent things, both in the word and providence of God, disciples do not understand at their first acquaintance with the things of God. The right understanding of spiritual nature of Christ's kingdom, prevents our misapplying the Scriptures which speak of it.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14By choosing a young donkey instead of a warhorse, Jesus calmed the excited crowd that was eager for him to become king. He also fulfilled Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah (see Zechariah 9:9). He made it clear that his kingship was not based on violence. He did not come as a warrior to conquer nations. He came to give life. His rule would bring peace, not military victory.Read the comment
