Context of 2 Timothy 4:10

8From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who crave His appearing. 9Make every effort to come to me quickly, because Demas, in his love of this world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is useful to me in the ministry. 12Tychicus, however, I have sent to Ephesus.

Commentaries on 2 Timothy 4:10

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10Demas hath forsaken me - This is another proof of the posteriority of this epistle: for Demas was with the apostle in his first imprisonment, and joins in the salutations, see Colossians 4:14, which were written when Paul was a prisoner at Rome for the first time. Having loved this present world - Having preferred Judaism to Christianity; or having loved the Jews, and having sought their welfare in preference to that of the Gentiles. The הזה עולם words…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10For Demas hath forsaken me - Demas is honorably mentioned in Colossians 4:14; but nothing more is known of him than what can be gathered from that place and this - that he was at first a friend and fellow-laborer of Paul, but that, under the influence of a desire to live, he afterward forsook him, even in circumstances where he greatly needed the presence of a friend. Having loved this present world - This does not mean, necessarily, that he was an…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 The love of this world, is often the cause of turning back from the truths and ways of Jesus Christ. Paul was guided by Divine inspiration, yet he would have his books. As long as we live, we must still learn. The apostles did not neglect human means, in seeking the necessaries of life, or their own instruction. Let us thank the Divine goodness in having given us so many writings of wise and pious men in all ages; and let us seek that by…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10Demas: See Colossians 4:14; Philemon 1:24. deserted: Also see 2 Timothy 4:16–17; compare Psalm 22:1; Mark 15:34. love of this world: This contrasts with awaiting Christ’s glorious return (2 Timothy 4:8). Crescens is otherwise unknown. The absence of Crescens and Titus seems to have increased Paul’s isolation. Titus was Paul’s effective and reliable fellow worker. He might have gone to Dalmatia (northwest of modern-day Greece) on a mission for Paul.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. Demas--once a "fellow laborer" of Paul, along with Mark and Luke (Col 4:14; Phm 24). His motive for forsaking Paul seems to have been love of worldly ease, safety, and comforts at home, and disinclination to brave danger with Paul (Mt 13:20, 21, 22). Chrysostom implies that Thessalonica was his home. Galatia--One oldest manuscript supports the reading "Gaul." But most oldest manuscripts, &c., "Galatia." Titus--He must have therefore left Crete after…Read the comment
