Context of Isaiah 52:9
7How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace, that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation, that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! 8The voice of thy watchmen! they lift up the voice, together do they sing; for they shall see eye to eye, when Jehovah returneth to Zion. Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for Jehovah hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. 10Jehovah hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. 11Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; cleanse yourselves, ye that bear the vessels of Jehovah.

Commentaries on Isaiah 52:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9He hath redeemed Jerusalem "He hath redeemed Israel" - For the word ירושלם yerushalaim, which occurs the second time in this verse, MS. Bodleian and another read ישראל yisrael . It is upon a rasure in a third; and left unpointed at first, as suspected, in a fourth. It was an easy mistake, by the transcriber casting his eye on the line above: and the propriety of the correction, both in regard to sense and elegance, is evident.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Break forth into joy - Jerusalem, at the time here referred to, was lying waste and in ruins. This call on the waste places of Jerusalem to break out into expressions of praise, is in accordance with a style which frequently occurs in Isaiah, and in other sacred writers, by which inanimate objects are called on to manifest their joy (see the notes at Isaiah 14:7-8; Isaiah 42:11). For the Lord hath comforted his people - That is, he does comfort his…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-12This passage uses poetry to describe God’s promise to save his people. Their sin had separated them from God (it had broken their relationship with him). God promised to remove that separation and bring them back to himself. The picture is of a city surrounded by enemy armies. The people inside the city are waiting for news. They hope to hear that their hero has defeated the enemy and won the battle. Paul uses these words to speak about the good news of…Read the comment
